According to Mohamed Kassim (Kash[S7]), in his
letters he wrote
that his father Sohan was born in Trinidad. Perhaps, en-route to British
Guiana from Grenada, the family may have stopped in Trinidad for some time.
It may be assumed that Sohan was born during this brief stop. One should
not, however, totally dismiss the likelihood of Sohan also being born in
Grenada. More research is needed in this connection. It is reasonable to
suggest that Sohan was born sometime around 1865 to1870.
Due to his young age, it is known that Sohan arrived in British Guiana as a free agent. We do not know much about his early education except that he communicated in writing to his relatives in India in either Urdu or Gugrati which meant that he probably received his early schooling, either in Trinidad or at Vryheid's Lust estate, from someone who was literate amongst the indentured population . He worked for the Georgetown Municipality with The Water Works* under Alexander Russell, Chief Engineer. Thereafter, he bought his first property at Plaisance [Kash, Babjin]. He then acquired properties in Mahaica, Dundee and Bara Bara. He also had one of the few Model-T Ford motor car in British Guiana at that time. In 1888 Sohan married Naziran aka "Dhanda" from Non-Pareil, East Coast Demerara [McDoom Village, East Bank Demerara according to Kash] and in 1890 was blessed with their first child, Mohammed Hussain who was born at Plaisance. In total there were five sons and three daughters. Naziran was known to be a tall stately woman of fair complexion perhaps of Pathan-Punjabi lineage. One of her well known characteristics was the stutter in her speech. It may well be that the distinctive Sohan stutter could have been derived from her. Sohan died on 6th. Dec. 1933 and Naziran on 17th. 1943. Both are buried at Lot 3 (North), Dundee, Mahaicony. May Allah Suhanahu wa Ta'ala shower His Rahmah (Mercy) on them. |
